The meeting of the Memphis Bonsai Society took place Tuesday, Feb. 24, at the Memphis Botanic Garden.  Items of business were:

Announcement by Tom Essmyer, President, about the March 7 sale at Brussel's Bonsai Nursery.  There is no scheduled workshop/demonstration.

Members are reminded that if you wish to attend the Rendezvous at Brussel's, you can received a $150.00 price tag for the event if you sign up before April 1.  After that date, the price will be $200.00 for the entire event.  Workshop participation is over and above that price.  Great bonsai artists lined up for the workshops and great material will be used.

The change to the constitution/By Laws of the Memphis Bonsai Society was opened up for any discussion.  Motion was made by Darryl to pass the change and seconded by Fred. The change was passed overwhelmingly.

Members were once again reminded about the Kathy Shaner weekend workshop.  With a few members moving their requests from one day to the other, there are now 5 members participants for each day.  This should provide for close and personal attention.

Darryl and Fred then presented information on the multiple sources of bonsai which then led to the discussion of cuttings, root and from branches.  For those who were not present and are interested in starting plant material from cuttings, here are a couple of good websites to visit.

Darryl also made a presentation on "Frugal Bonsai".  Darryl showed the members tools which are available through other resources and at a lesser cost.  He did recommend certain tools that are very specific to bonsai and should be a part of every bonsai enthusiasts tool kit.  He also showed other products which could be helpful in developing and styling bonsai. There also was a brief discussion on bonsai styling of young plants and the proper technique to be used in plucking new growth on Japanese Maples in order to control growth and reduce the length of internodes.
