Although summer hasn’t officially ended, many consider the beginning of autumn to occur after Labor Day.  Labor Day has come and gone so summer has either ended or will officially end shortly.

So What?? Well it is time to continue to pay close attention to your trees and their need for water.  Although we have had a cooler than usual summer, it is still hot out there and the water needs of your trees needs to continue to be a priority.

Insects- Yep! Keep a watchful eye out for harmful insects.  Trees have been stressed because of our summer heat and are the subject to being attacked more readily by harmful insects.  Healthy trees do not seem as inviting to insects.

How about fertilization? Yep! I am still fertilizing but with an organic fertilizer that is not going to stimulate the growth of the tree excessively.  Organic is the place to go. Slow and Easy.

Wiring-Many of us placed wire on our trees in spring and early summer.  Has the wire started to cut in to the branches???  Younger trees grow faster and may have already set the branches but may also now be cutting into those branches. Older trees do not grow as fast and may not be as great a problem. The moral of the story is to check your wiring now.  Remove wire that is cutting in.  After you remove the wire and find that the branch has not yet set, rewire the branch; but, as in good wiring practice, do not wrap the wire around the branch but rather COIL it around the branch.
